Minimal information principle - the foundation of a good flashcard
New post
The minimal information principle is a key guiding principle in creating Anki flashcards.
The principle states that simple questions with simple answers lead to much better retention than questions that require complex answers. We have mentioned this rule in the past, but we have not yet mentioned the name of this principle.
It may seem better to have longer answers on one card and have fewer cards overall, but we will review such cards more slowly and make more mistakes.
It is better to make many short cards. We can review these much faster and, more importantly, with fewer errors. This way, we don't waste time and learn as efficiently as possible.
As a result, we have more time for other things in life (or, if you feel the need, more studying).
